Results: Once I submitted my information, the site produced one quote, along with six links to other insurance companies. “View my quote” buttons next to each quote took me to the beginning of the insurance website’s own quoting tool, making it clear that these were strictly hypothetical rates. Everquote provided a blurb of marketing text about two of the companies and no helpful information whatsoever to guide my decision.
Part of why car insurance quotes are so confusing is because car insurance itself is confusing. For starters, there are different types of coverage. Some are required by law; some are not. And the specifics vary by state. We’ve got a full explainer on how car insurance works right here. But, since it’s so crucial to understanding your quotes, here’s an overview of the major components of an auto insurance policy — and what they cover.

Across the board, the longer and with the higher limits you have insurance, the cheaper your premium will be. Using historical data, insurance companies see those with above state minimum requirements as less likely to file a claim or get into an accident. Because of the decreased risk you present, insurance companies tend to lower your rates. In essence, the longer you've been insured for, the lower your rates will be, with all other metrics kept constant.
Mebane, named after the Revolutionary War general and U.S. Congressman Alexander Mebane Jr, was originally called Mebanesville. The city is home to 11,300 residents, who are split between Alamance County and Orange County. It also takes the spot of the city with the 2nd best rates for car insurance in North Carolina. Rates here are 6% cheaper compared to the typical city in the Tar Heel State, with our sample drivers seeing average costs of $755 per year. For even more savings on auto insurance, we suggest comparison shopping at Auto Owners, North Carolina Farm Bureau, Penn National, Allied, and Erie. We found the top five most affordable companies to have average annual quotes of $650, which is 13% less than what the typical Mebane driver pays. Keep in mind that North Carolina Farm Bureau has a $25 membership fee, but all individuals, regardless of profession, are welcome to be members.
This fee is when submission of an SR-22 is requested by the policyholder. According to the Safety Responsibility or Evidence of Financial Responsibility law, persons whose driving privilege has been suspended or revoked for an accident, conviction, or judgment are required to file and maintain a Form SR-22 with the Department of Public Safety. If you feel that you may be required to file an SR-22, contact the Department of Public Safety for further clarification.

No matter which company you quote or what state you live, all auto insurers will want to know your driving history. In most cases, it will be hard to forget a ticket you received or accident that you were involved in. Many insurers will accept estimated dates if you are close. However, if you want more exact numbers, then then you can always call your local Department/Bureau of Motor Vehicles.
Beyond the state regulations, you will also find a wealth of opportunities to learn more about auto insurance as we continue to expand the information within our Car Insurance Center. Fayetteville is our #1 Most Expensive City in North Carolina, with an average annual cost of $977 when it comes to insuring an automobile - that's 21% more for our sample drivers than the typical NC city. Fayetteville is a fast-growing city with a population of over 203,000 residents, which makes it the sixth largest city in North Carolina. It was almost the capital of North Carolina (lost by one vote!), and was named after the Marquis de Lafayette when he visited in 1825. The Marquis toured the 24 state union in a carriage, which can be found in the Fayetteville Independent Light Infantry Amory & Museum. We suggest Fayetteville drivers save on auto insurance by looking into Auto Owners, Allied, North Carolina Farm Bureau, Erie, and Penn National. We found rates across these five companies to be $792 near you, which is 21% less than what drivers across Fayetteville usually pay. One thing to remember is that North Carolina Farm Bureau has a $25 membership fee but its low rates on auto insurance make joining worthwhile.
Drivers with good driving records typically enjoy lower car insurance costs than drivers with histories of speeding tickets, at-fault accidents, or DUI citations. Virginia drivers without a recent at-fault accident can save 33% on their car insurance premiums, on average — nearly matching the 32% US average. In addition to earning a cheaper premium for driving incident-free, you may qualify for a safe-driving bonus through your car insurance company. The amount of these discounts may vary, but they typically run between 5 and 10%.

One note on price: Not all insurers will quote based on what you’ll pay each month. Some might list the annual or even semi-annual cost of a policy. (Why? Who knows? Insurance will never get accused of being easy.) Point is, here, too, you’ll want to be sure you’re comparing apples to apples. (Prices vary widely enough where it’s easy to get confused on the actual price.) That way, you know what insurer is truly offering the best price.

This is a $10.00 fee that is applied to your account for a reinstatement related to non-pay cancellations. For example, if you miss your payment due date, and cannot pay before the cancellation date on your non-pay cancellation notice, a $10.00 fee will be applied to your account if and only if you decide to reinstate your policy. Elephant will never charge you a reinstatement fee if your policy has been canceled in error.
That’s also hard to say. Beyond how much coverage you’re looking to buy, the cost of car insurance is affected by driving record, place of residence, type of car, how much you drive and your personal details (age, gender, marital status, etc.) But just so you have a frame of reference for what types of prices to expect, the average annual cost for car insurance was about $900 back in 2014.
Many insurance companies offer a discount for enrolling in their telematics program, which means they’ll monitor your driving through either a phone app or small, installable tool. Some companies will offer a discount just for allowing them to track your driving, while others will monitor while you drive and offer price reductions based on your skills.

We analyzed auto insurance quotes for two sample drivers as a benchmark, and compared their costs in 80+ cities in the Tar Heel State. The analysis found that the average premium for our profiled drivers is $807 per year - the cheapest car insurance company in North Carolina cost nearly half as much as the most expensive company. For this reason, it's in consumers' best interests to get at least three quotes to make sure they're getting good rates for themselves. Enter your zip above to see which insurers are active near you, or for more information, read below:
A higher deductible means lower premiums, your monthly or annual price. But if you get in an accident, you will have to pay more than if your deductibles were lower. For example, if you have a $500 deductible on a $2,000 accident, you’d pay $500 before your insurance company covers the other $1,500. With a $1,000 deductible, you’re paying $1,000 and your insurer covers the remaining $1,000.
The car your drive makes a big difference in your insurance rate. Vehicles built for performance, with high MSRP (manufacturer's suggested retail price), and foreign-built models are often costlier to insure. Vehicles that don't cost as much to repair or aren't built for faster driving — such as vans and sedans — are correspondingly cheaper to insure.
Whether you can get a cheap car insurance quote may come down to your zip code. If you live in a densely populated area, with a high number of auto insurance claims, your premium will be more expensive than that of a person living in a less dense and less claim-laden part of town. Even if you haven’t filed any claims, you could pay more based solely on your neighborhood.
